Monument to Artsakh
Glendale, CA is the site of one of the largest diasporic Armenian communities in the world. The monument will be geolocated at the intersection of Artsakh Avenue and East Broadway, and will be viewable through Baker Cahill’s 4th Wall app. The monument addresses the Indigenous Armenian struggle for self-determination now unfolding in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh, and calls for the recognition of Artsakh’s independence. On October 23rd, the nonpartisan agency Genocide Watch classified the situation in Artsakh as a stage 9 state of emergency amid Azerbaijan’s genocidal campaign against ethnic Armenians. Artsakh Monument aims to bring visibility to the genocide in the region, and to distribute accurate information about the humanitarian crisis transpiring there. Artsakh Monument will feature visuals by Abrahamian drawn from their “Recognize Artsakh Now” poster campaign and inspired by Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov. It will also feature audio by Sargsyan, and link to a video essay created by Abrahamian and Hakopian based on the latter’s recent text in the Los Angeles Review of Books.
